Continuous Welded Serrated Finned Coils
Continuous welded serrated finned coils for maximum heat transfer

What Is a Continuous Welded Serrated Finned Coil?
A continuous welded serrated finned coil is made from finned tubes in which the outer edge of the fin strip is cut into segments and the fin is continuously welded to the tube. This combines the heat transfer performance of serrated fins with the mechanical strength of a welded connection.
Why Are Serrated Fins More Efficient?
The segmented fin structure causes the gas flow boundary layer to redevelop at each segment and increases turbulence. This produces a higher heat transfer coefficient than solid fins for the same surface area, allowing more compact and lighter heat transfer surfaces.
Advantages
- High Heat Transfer Coefficient: Turbulence improves gas-side efficiency.
- Compact Design: The same capacity can be achieved with fewer tubes and less space.
- Welded Strength: Fins remain secure under high temperature and vibration.
- Weight Advantage: Segmented fins save material compared with equivalent solid-fin solutions.
Applications
- Heat recovery steam generators, or HRSGs, and cogeneration systems
- Boiler economizers and flue gas heat recovery
- Process heaters and air preheaters
- Petrochemical and power plant applications
Design Considerations
Serrated fins offer high efficiency, but solid fins may be more suitable for gases with very high soot and dust loads. The Heatmek engineering team assesses gas composition, fouling risk, temperature and pressure drop limits together to select the fin type, segment width and fin pitch.
