Continuous welded finned coils for high temperatures and pressures

What Is a Continuous Welded Finned Coil?
A continuous welded finned coil is a heat transfer component made from finned tubes in which steel fin strip is helically wound around the tube and continuously welded at the same time. The metallurgical bond between fin and tube minimises contact resistance and supports efficient heat transfer from fluid to fins.
Manufacturing Method
During production, steel strip is wound around a rotating tube at the specified fin pitch, while high-frequency resistance welding continuously joins the contact line. This produces much greater mechanical strength than tension-wound fins. The tubes are then bent and welded to headers according to the project to create the coil assembly.
Advantages
- High-Temperature Resistance: The welded connection prevents fins from loosening even at high flue gas temperatures.
- Low Contact Resistance: The metallurgical bond maintains heat transfer efficiency over many years.
- Vibration and Thermal Shock Resistance: Reliable operation in systems with frequent start-stop cycles.
- Long Service Life: Reduced maintenance requirements because the fins do not separate from the tube.
Applications
- Steam and high-temperature water boilers
- Economizers and waste heat recovery systems
- Air preheaters and process heaters
- Drying facilities and industrial furnace applications
Material and Design Options
Continuous welded finned coils can be manufactured using carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel tube-fin combinations. Fin height, fin pitch, number of rows and tube diameter are determined through engineering calculations based on fluid type, temperature, pressure and allowable pressure drop. Hot-dip galvanizing can be applied where required.
