Elliptical Coils: Aerodynamic Efficiency and Low Flow Resistance

Flow resistance, a major challenge in heat transfer fluid mechanics, is minimised through elliptical coil design. The oval shape reduces form drag and optimises flow around the tube surface. Compared with circular tubes, elliptical tubes reduce fan energy consumption while increasing the heat transfer coefficient.

Heatmek’s oval tube coils have a robust structure that provides resistance to mechanical loads. These bimetallic tube systems offer protection against atmospheric corrosion, have been tested in environments using strong chemicals and can be cleaned with steam or pressurised water.

Technical Dimensions and Manufacturing Standards

Manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel or copper according to customer and system requirements, elliptical coils are suitable for both spiral fins and plate fins. Pressing the fins tightly around the tube during manufacture eliminates gaps between fin and tube to improve thermal conduction.

  • Single Oval Tube Construction: Standard tube dimensions are D×C = 35×14 mm.
  • Double Oval Tube Construction: D×C = 26×12 mm dimensions are preferred for high-capacity requirements.
  • Coating Options: Galvanized coating options are available to improve corrosion resistance and slow oxidation.

Advantages and Features of Elliptical Coils

Elliptical coils offer technical advantages over conventional circular tube systems. Their structure maintains its shape under high temperature and pressure, providing economical, energy-saving solutions:

  • High Operating Temperature: Depending on the material, suitable for operating temperatures of 285–300°C.
  • Reduced Resistance: The aerodynamic shape minimises air-side pressure drop and saves fan energy.
  • Mechanical Strength: Internal expansion and interference fitting integrate fins with the tube, maintaining performance in vibrating environments.
  • Flexible Material Selection: Can be manufactured from cold-rolled steel, copper, brass and stainless steel tubes to suit your project.

Applications and Operating Efficiency

With optimised thermodynamic properties, these coils are important components in industrial heating and cooling processes. Galvanized carbon steel models, with welded or seamless tubes, provide corrosion protection, while stainless steel models are preferred for hygienic processes and lines containing aggressive chemicals.

The compact design of elliptical coils is particularly beneficial in air handling units, drying ovens and oil cooling units that need a large heat transfer surface in limited space.

Frequently Asked Questions

An elliptical coil is a special heat exchanger using oval tubes to provide an aerodynamic shape. Its key difference from circular tubes is 20–30% lower airflow resistance. This shape reduces inefficient dead zones behind the tubes and improves the heat transfer coefficient.
The aerodynamic shape significantly reduces air-side pressure drop. This allows supply fans to run at lower speeds and consume less power. The resulting fan energy savings make elliptical coils an economical long-term solution.
Depending on the material used, such as carbon steel, stainless steel or copper, Heatmek elliptical coils are suitable for operating temperatures of 285–300°C. This durability makes them suitable for thermal oil and high-pressure steam systems.
Two main standards are used according to system capacity: 35×14 mm tubes are generally used in single-tube construction, while 26×12 mm tubes are preferred for more compact double-tube systems requiring a greater surface area.
Hot-dip galvanizing is an effective method for preventing atmospheric corrosion and oxidation, particularly on carbon steel models. It coats tube-fin joints, supports thermal conduction and forms a protective barrier. Electrogalvanized options are also available.
